Why choose an infrared heater?
In order to understand why you would want an infrared space heater, you really need to understand why you would want any kind of space heater. The answer? Zone heating, which simply means heating just the parts of your home that you're using at any given time. In fact, when you see infrared heater ads that say "Buy this heater and cut your heating bill to just pennies a day!", this is exactly what they're talking about.
Zone heating is a great way to save money on your heating bill. The trouble is that, in most homes, it requires the use of electric space heaters, which are dangerous, unreliable and quite unattractive as well. Enter the portable wood-cabinet infrared space heater. A contest between it and a traditional electric space heater is, well... no contest! Let's take a look at some specifics.
Safety
This is, without a doubt, the most important benefit of a portable infrared heater such as the ones we offer. According to a National Fire Protection Agency report, almost 16% of deaths occurring in residential fires from 2003-2007 were caused by misused or malfunctioning space heaters. In 13% of home heating related fires, the cause was listed as "heater too close to combustibles."
Tests have shown that the design used in our portable infrared heater, in which the heating elements are totally enclosed, makes these heaters some of the safest on the market. It's literally almost impossible for this heater to start a fire!
Reliability
Standard space heaters tend to be made from cheap components in China or elsewhere overseas. Their air intakes are usually unfiltered, which means that the heater soon fills with dust, which coats the elements and clogs the fan motor. The thermostat, if there is one, is usually located on the front, where hot air from the heater passes directly over it, causing the heater to turn itself off and on again repeatedly, and reducing the life of the components. Warranties are rarely longer than a year, and parts aren't readily available.
Buy any one of the infrared heaters we offer and say goodbye to all the above design flaws. Plus, say hello to a product that's made from quality, brand-name components in the heartland of America, and comes with a 3-year warranty to boot. Now that's something you can take to the bank!
Comfort
Just about every living creature is attracted to warmth, especially during the dark, cold months of winter. Young and old, humans and four-legged friends alike gravitate to that warm spot in the kitchen or in front of the fireplace. Unfortunately, curling up with good book next to an electric space heater is not only a risky alternative, but a comparatively uncomfortable one as well, due the harsh and "dry" heat it produces.
The heat from a home infrared heater, on the other hand, has been variously described as "moist", "soft" and "penetrating". This may have to do with the fact that, unlike standard radiant heaters, which work primarily through convection, infrared heaters directly heat the water molecules in the air. This has also been observed to have the effect of heating a room evenly from floor to ceiling, eliminating "cold spots" in a way that conventional space heaters cannot. And when you see your toddler playing near one of these heaters, or the cat sleeping on top, you won't have to worry.
Style
There's a reason why you won't find very many space heaters on the front cover of "Better Homes and Gardens." The smaller ones tend to pose a tripping hazard, while the larger models are bulky, obtrusive and often easily overturned. In addition, because of the safety factor, most have to be kept well away from anything flammable, which, unfortunately, means almost everything in the average home.
When you buy an infrared heater from us, though, you're actually buying a piece of furniture. The handsome wood cabinets blend in naturally with any decor, and the size and shape make them easy to use and store, but hard to knock over. As a matter of fact, in the case of the Deluxe model, the cabinet is meant to be used as an end table!
