How Did The Amish Get Into Making Heaters?

Not all Amish communities are alike. Some shun all the modern conveniences like cars and electricity, while others accept them on a limited basis. The Amish Mennonite community of Buffalo, Missouri is in the latter category, and their manufacturing and construction businesses are at the center of local industry. Their connection with infrared heaters began in the mid 90's, with the inventor of the original enclosed infrared heater, John P. Jones. At that time Mr. Jones was in need of a new manufacturer to form the internal sheet metal parts for his Sun-Twin™ heater, and approached HMC, the Mennonite manufacturing company run by the Hostetler family, which had previously made mostly agricultural products. HMC manufactured the sheet metal parts for the Sun-Twin until Mr. Jones' death in 1999, and continued with its successor, the Sun-Twin Cozy, until 2005, when the heater was sold to BioTech Research and became the EdenPure.

BioTech lost no time in moving operations overseas. Upset by this, a local dealer convinced Jones' former plant manager, Norman Cameron, to design and build a new generation of infrared heaters, called the SolarFlare. In 2006, Reliable Products, Inc., bought the SolarFlare name and patent, and enlisted HMC to make the entire heater, with the cabinet being made in a woodworking shop run by the same Mennonite family.

Hostetler Manufacturing Company continues today to make every SolarFlare infrared heater, basically from scratch. They form the sheet metal parts, assemble the heaters, package and ship them, and even handle the warranty work when the occasional problem arises.
